FUJI is a reinterpretation of the traditional, round shape of the Japanese paper lantern designed by Tosshiyuki Tani. It is shaped as an equilateral octagon solely by means of heat treatment – entirely without the use of a wire frame.
The name Fuji refers to the famous Japanese mountain. The lantern originates from the city of Mito, known as one of Japan's most important areas for paper lantern production. The surface is treated with a special process that makes it resistant to water and stains, and the construction is made with environmentally friendly materials, including a frame of PET resin. Where bamboo or metal wire is usually used for the frame, this one is cast in PET resin instead to allow light to pass through the structure and create a lighter silhouette.
