The koi fish is hand-painted in a small paper factory in Japan - one of the few places where they still make them. The koi fish is produced in a limited number each year for Children's Day on May 5th in Japan.

In Japanese culture, the koi fish symbolizes strength and perseverance. It is associated with the ability to swim against the current and the will to keep moving forward, even when facing adversity.

Koinobori are traditionally hung outdoors, where the wind fills the fish and brings them to life. They are put up as a wish for children to grow up healthy, strong, and brave.
